Registered Voters Have More Options with Mail-In Ballots

SOMERVILLE Don’t feel like going to the polls?  The Somerset County Clerk’s Office, located in the county Administration Building at 20 Grove Street, wants residents to know that they can choose to mail in their vote for any election.

Based on legislation passed in 2005, registered voters no longer need a reason to vote by absentee ballot.  In June, the Governor signed the “Vote by Mail” law that allows all voters to request a Mail-in Ballot for upcoming elections and to receive Mail-In Ballots automatically for future elections.

“The voting process has become more convenient than ever for registered voters.  Anyone can apply for Mail-in Ballots,” said Somerset County Clerk Brett Radi.  “Voters do not need to be out of state to submit a vote by mail, and they do not have to provide a reason for requesting one.”

On the application, voters will select the upcoming election they wish to vote by mail.   In addition, there are two options to receive future Mail-In Ballots automatically. By selecting Option A, the voter will automatically receive Mail-In Ballots for all elections for the remainder of the calendar year. Voters must renew their request each calendar year to continue to receive mail-in ballots automatically.

By selecting Option B, the voter will automatically receive a Mail-In Ballot for all future November General Elections.  Voters can select one or both options on the application.

Once completed and signed, applications can be mailed to the County Clerk’s Office, PO Box 3000, Somerville NJ 08876.   Mailed applications must be received at least seven days prior to any election. Voters may complete a Mail-In Ballot Application in person at the office of the County Clerk until 3:00 p.m. the day before the election.

The County Clerk’s Office cannot accept faxed or emailed copies of Mail-In Ballot applications, with the exception of Military or Overseas Voters, since an original signature is required.
